WALKING HOME IN A STORM

To the beat of the wind,

the trees dance and sway.

The rain seeps down

my raincoat neck,

dripping, dropping

every which way.

I smell the earth all soggy wet.

A boom!

A slash!

A lightning flash!

I scurry along

and slip and trip.

But then I stop

and enjoy each drop.

I taste a raindrop on my cheek.

It’s salty and it’s kind of sweet.

I let myself get wonderfully  wet

and I jump in the

next…..

big…..

PUDDLE!

During our poetry unit, we realize that poetry depends on our senses.  This poem “Walking Home in a Storm” made me visualize and experience our senses of hearing, touching, tasting, smelling and feeling all at once.

Read this poem and tell me how you feel?  Then answer these question.

l.  What senses did this poet use?

2. Tell one phrase that describes each of the senses used.

3. Are there any descriptive words that helped you to visualize?

4. What does the mood seem to be (angry, joyous, sad, silly etc.)

5. How do you think the author felt when he wrote this poem?  Have you ever felt this way?

6. Can you think of another title for this poem?

This poem makes me feel like walking around the block in the rain. The poet used a lots of senses: hearing- A boom! A slash! seeing- A lightning flash! tasting- I taste a raindrop on my cheek. touching- The rain seeps down my raincoat neck. smelling- I smell the soggy earth. I jump in the next big puddle makes me visualize me jumping in a puddle. The beginning of the poem the mood seems to be calming down. At the middle the mood seems to be angry. At the end it seems to be having fun. I think the poet felt excited. I never felt this way walking through the rain! I’m scared of lightning and rain so I don’t enjoy it. Another name could for this poem could be “The Rainy Day” because the poem is mostly about rain!

This poem makes me feel happy because it has rhyming words in it. The senses the poet used are smelling. I’ts a smelling sense. The mood should be joyful because you get to jump in the puddles. I think he felt happy when he wrote this poem. Yes when I made a book it made me feel the same way. I have another title it is ‘Let It Rain’. I chose this title because I like to play in the rain.

This poem makes me feel like going outside in the rain.It uses our senses, like hearing- beat of the wind, the trees dance and sway. The rain seeps down my raincoat neck,seeing- a lighting flash smell- the earth all soggy wet tasting- salty and sweet. The words slip and trip help me visualize the girl skipping in the rain, and then she tripped and fell.I think the author felt joyful because the poet makes you feel like playing.I remember when I had a birthday party and my friends came.I felt glad to have friends celebrating my birthday too.I thought of another title and it is “A RAINY DAY.”

This poem makes me feel wet.
The mood seems to be angry at the beginning because it said a boom a slash a lighting flash and relaxed at the end because it said enjoy.
When the author wrote the poem I think he felt scared and calm.
A time that I felt this way was when my dad’s car wasnt working, so I had to walk to school in the rain.I felt the rain dripping on my hair and saw lightning.
Another name for this poem can be ‘A Stormy Day’ because it really stormed.

This poem makes me feel cold when it said ‘smell the soggy wet earth.’ It makes me feel scared when it said ‘a boom, a slash, a lightning flash.’ It makes me happy when it said ‘I get myself wet so that I can jump in the next big puddle.’ The poem used our senses of hearing, touching, smelling, tasting and seeing. The poem’s mood is joyful and scary, scary at the beginning and joyful at the end. I think the author is proud of himself because he wrote a wonderful poem. I would like to give this poem another title, “What Happens in the Rain.”

This poem makes me feel elated because it was the best poem I ever read. The mood of the poem was scary when it said “A boom! A splash! A lightning flash!” At first the author felt frightened in the storm but after a while he enjoys the rain. I felt this way when I was with my family, cousins and friends in a cabin in a forest last summer vacation. There was heavy rain, thunder and lightning and we were so scared.

This poem makes me feel excited because I like rain. The senses that the poet used were hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting. I think the author felt scared at first, then he felt happy. It reminds me of when my cousins came to my house. We were playing in the rain and I fell down and I felt scared because I thought they would push me down again, But then we played basketball after and I felt happy. I would like to give this story the title “The Storm That I Played In.” I enjoyed this poem.

I felt scared and joyful at the same time when I read this poem. This poem reminds me of the a time when I was stuck outside in the rain. I was walking home from school when it began to thunder and rain. I felt really scared! The author used many senses: hearing, seeing, tasting, and smelling. This is a great poem
